Equine Consulting Services offers a unique service for breeders and trainers throughout Australia and overseas.
Our objectives are to apply scientific principles and methods to:
-
Improve the productivity, health and performance of breeding and racing horses;
- Contribute to the economic efficiency and sustainability of stud farms and training establishments.
Ultimately we aim to improve the competitiveness, productivity and profitability of our clients by assisting in optimising foal growth, reducing disease and improving the potential of horses to perform.
Our services include:
EVALUATION OF FEEDING PROGRAMS
- As independent consultants we are in a position to offer impartial advice on feeding programs.
- Alternative feeding programs may be designed based on raw materials (grains/protein meals) or commercial feeds and supplements to balance existing nutrient levels from pastures and other sources.
- Our network of contacts within the industry means that we are able to supply our clients with competitive pricing on many raw materials and products.
HERD IMPROVEMENT
Through our research and collaborations with veterinarians and universities, we strive to improve broodmare and stallion productivity, foal growth and development and racehorse performance, and reduce the incidence of disease and injury through improved feeding programs and management strategies. Methods of overall herd improvement may include:
- Improvement of broodmare productivity and foal growth through optimal feeding programs designed to complement pasture nutrient profiles;
- Optimising energy levels and nutrient profiles of racing rations for optimal performance;
- Identification of factors contributing to diseases and injuries and implementation of nutritional and management strategies to assist in improving overall health and performance.
- Examples include nutritional manipulation of rations for horses prone to tying up, laminitis, and racing injuries (e.g. shin soreness).
PASTURE/GRAIN MONITORING
In situations where pasture or raw grains make up the bulk of a feeding program, samples are routinely tested for nutrient profiles to ensure feeding programs remain optimal. In stud farm environments, this information is often provided to agronomists to assist in improving soil management and pasture growth.
FEED COST MANAGEMENT
Cost benefit analyses are conducted when devising and evaluating feeding programs, giving our clients an indication of feed costs on a per horse per day basis. Strategies to minimise costs are advised.
INFORMATION TRANSFER
We are committed to the continual transfer of information from research projects to our clients.
